J. Wood Platt Scholarship

The J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust is sponsored by the Golf Association of Philadelphia. It was established in 1958 and named in honor of Philadelphia’s premier golfer of the era. Mr. Platt was the Trust’s co-founder and first contributor.

The Trust financially aids deserving young caddies in their pursuit of higher education. The individuals must have caddied for at least one year at one or more Member Clubs of the Golf Association of Philadelphia. They also must have good academic qualifications and be in need of financial aid to meet college expenses. Caddies are selected to receive scholarship funds on a semi-annual basis by the Trustees. The caddies selected will continue to receive financial aid for the full length of their college career. It is also mandatory that they continue to caddie while receiving these grants for their education.

Each year Huntsville Golf Club sends a letter to its membership encouraging them to contribute to this worthwhile scholarship fund. We have had a good participation in the past and hope to improve our membership contributions in the future.

Those members who wish to contribute can do so by sending a check payable to “J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust” to the Club office, or by having your account billed for the amount of money you wish to contribut

Many members who make a contribution are eligible for the PAR Club. The club, which was started in 1978, is open to those people who make annual gifts to the Trust in the amount of $125 (Par), $300 (Birdie) or $600 (Eagle). The category of $10,000 (Lifetime) was added in 1994 for those individuals wishing to establish an endowment. Members of the PAR Club receive a personalized bag tag for recognition.
